The Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients gave UW Medicine’s heart transplant program a score of 5, the highest possible, denoting “better than expected” patient outcomes. Of the eight top-scoring facilities in the U.S., UW Medical Center had the highest volume of heart transplants, 48, during the year covered by the report. “This reflects a big team whose individuals are functioning at a very high level in every area: patient evaluation, making sure our wait list is property managed, the pre-op process, the operation and all the post-op care,” says Nahush Mokadam, M.D., UW professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, co-director of heart transplantation at UW Medical Center, and the Lester and Connie LeRoss Endowed Professor in Cardiovascular Surgery. “It reinforces that we are a world-class transplant program.”
