Stephen Ellison’s ancestors have been part of Prince of Wales Island, Alaska, for thousands of years. And Ellison, who left his hometown of Klawock to go to medical school, has no intention of breaking the chain. A student in the UW School of Medicine’s WWAMI educational program — created to supply the five-state region of Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho with doctors — Ellison is going home with a medical degree and the desire to serve his community. “Klawock is always going to be here,” he says. “I want to make sure I do my part to keep it going and keep it alive and well.”
