EST. 2007
Please address your letter to:
Henry A. Kuharic, M.D.
Henry Kuharic was born in the family kitchen in Newcastle, Washington in 1928, raised on a farm outside of Issaquah, and attended grade school in a one-room schoolhouse in Newcastle. In sixth grade, he attended the “big” school in Issaquah, where there were 23 students in his class (the population of Issaquah was 812 at the time). The school was so small that he was captain of the track team, student body president, and editor of the yearbook during his senior year. Upon graduating, Henry was a finalist in the national Westinghouse Science Talent Search and accepted a full scholarship to Harvard. He returned to Seattle to enroll in the School of Medicine at the University of Washington, from which he gradauted in 1954.
Henry went back East to Philadelphia General Hospital for a rotating internship and then to the University of Cincinnati for a year of internal medicine residency. He was drafted into the U.S. Army for two years and served as chief of medical and laboratory services at a station hospital. After Henry completed his military service in 1958, he finished his internal medicine residency at the University of Colorado in 1960. He continued with a teaching and research fellowship and ultimately became interested in pulmonary medicine.
Dr. Kuharic enjoyed an active role in teaching as an assistant in medicine, a fellow in chest and infectious disease, and as an attending and clinical professor while practicing. In 1997, he was awarded the Humanitarian Award from the UW Medical Alumni Association in recognition of his attention to patients, and his efforts to improve health at home and abroad.
It is Dr. Kuharic’s hope that, with the help of this scholarship, students with interests in infectious diseases and global health will receive additional financial support as they receive an excellent medical education.
