UW Medicine delivers exceptional care, advances groundbreaking research and trains the next generation of scientists and healthcare leaders — thanks to the powerful combination of donor generosity and federal funding.
But today, this progress faces new challenges.
Federal funding for many of our programs is uncertain. Without it, patients and families across the five-state region we serve — which includes Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho — will feel the impact immediately:
• In Washington, roughly 1 in 5 people — including 800,000 children — rely on Medicaid. Cuts will decrease our ability to provide essential care to members of our community, especially the most vulnerable.
• Clinical trials may be paused or terminated because of federal budget reductions. This not only delays life-changing breakthroughs — it leaves real patients in limbo, unsure if their care will continue.
• Less support for education, training and research today means fewer opportunities for medical students, residents and trainees to gain critical knowledge and fewer applicants to our PhD programs. This will shrink the pipeline of future providers and scientists — and impact healthcare for all of us in the years to come.
As one of the largest medical research institutions in the world — and the only health system in our region with a top-ranked medical school — UW Medicine is unique. Our discoveries lead to better treatments that improve health. Our exceptional care offers hope and healing to people throughout the region. And our education prepares tomorrow’s leaders in healthcare and biomedical research.
Your compassionate support today will help us respond to urgent challenges so we can continue our mission to improve health for everyone.
