The Benjamin H. Belknap Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1994 to support underrepresented minority medical students. Dr. Benjamin Belknap started his career at the University of Washington as a medical intern in 1961. He left for a short time in 1967 but returned in 1971 as an associate professor and medical director of UW Medical Center. Afterward, he was the assistant dean of admissions, associate dean for administration, and vice dean of the School of Medicine. He was also a professor of medicine.

Dr. Belknap was devoted to issues involving disadvantaged students and those from underrepresented minorities, and was determined to make a difference in the lives of young people and the people they would eventually serve. He led the School’s Task Force on Minority Affairs, which resulted in a plan to assist minority medical students; he felt a great sense of pride as he witnessed the minority student body grow as a result. Dr. Belknap passed away in 1994 at the age of 63. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen.
