Ms. Clara C. Elam

Lloyd C. Elam, M.D., Class of 1957, was one of the first African-American students at the UW School of Medicine. Now deceased, he had a long and distinguished career in psychiatry and college administration, having acted as the dean and the president of Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. He and his wife, Clara, a nursing graduate of the UW, decided to create this scholarship in gratitude to the School of Medicine. They also wanted to help enhance the quality of care available to minorities and in underserved areas. The fund is being used to support the School of Medicine’s commitment to a diverse student population. “We’ve enjoyed our lives,” said Dr. Elam, “and I hope young people coming along will get as much joy out of the profession as we have.”
