The Huckabay Family

The Durward A. Huckabay, M.D. Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 to honor Dr. Huckabay, who was born in Gladewater, Texas, in 1902 and died in Seattle in 1955. At the age of 14, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served almost four years, the majority in the Atlantic Fleet, stationed in Murmansk, Russia. After returning from World War I, he enrolled in high-school and pre-med courses at Centenary College in Louisiana. Completing these requirements in less than two years, he entered Tulane University’s School of Medicine in 1919. While he was working and finishing medical school, his parents died, and he assumed responsibility for his two brothers and two sisters.

Dr. Huckabay’s financial struggles as a medical student helped to inspire this gift from his son, Durward (“Huck,” who died in 2007), and daughter-in-law, Susan Stark Huckabay, both UW alumni. The Huckabays were aware of the financial hardships that many dedicated students experience as they prepare for careers in medicine. To help relieve that burden, the Huckabays made a number of gifts to their scholarship fund, and in 2003, they made a planned gift to student programs, including scholarship, at the School of Medicine.
