The Erna M. Jorgensen Endowed Scholarship Fund was established with a gift from Erna M. Jorgensen’s estate in 1994. Ms. Jorgensen immigrated from Denmark as a small child and became a naturalized citizen. Ms. Jorgensen and her younger brother were raised by a single mother who encouraged her daughter toward an education. Ms. Jorgensen never married but if you were her friend, you were a friend for life.
A 1928 School of Arts graduate from the University of Washington, Ms. Jorgensen was a longtime supporter of the School of Medicine. In 1929 a business opportunity arose and Ms. Jorgensen, with a personal investment, became the business partner of Mr. Harry Schuck and together they built Schuck’s Auto Supply into a successful business. The business flourished until it was sold in 1967. The success of Schuck’s Auto Supply made Ms. Jorgensen’s desire to help medical students a reality.
Her bequest specified that the scholarships be awarded to students who demonstrate both financial need and meritorious scholastic achievement in the pursuit of their medical education goals.
