Since 1957, the Everett Orville Jones, M.D. Scholarship and Loan Fund — created by a bequest from the estate of Dr. Everett O. Jones — has supported deserving medical students. The son of a physician, Dr. Jones moved to Seattle in the early 1900s and was one of Seattle’s first surgical specialists; he later served during World War I as the chief of the Bone and Joint Section of Base Hospital 50 in France. In private practice after the war, Dr. Jones became aware of the crippling financial problems that face people with serious illnesses, and he and a colleague advocated for the development of statewide medical insurance. Influenced by several family members with ties to the University, Dr. Jones made his gift to provide an excellent medical education for future physicians. Dr. Jones died in 1953.
