The Western Pathologists Quality Assurance Association has long supported the field of laboratory science. As the number of accredited programs has decreased over the years, the Western Pathologists Quality Assurance Association felt it was important to foster and support the programs that continue to thrive. The University of Washington set (and continues to set) a strong example of such a thriving program. Accordingly, the WPQAA set up the Western Pathology Quality Assurance Association Endowed Fund in 2002, and amended the fund in 2006 to establish the Medical Technology/ Western Pathology Quality Assurance Association Endowed Scholarship.

In 2015, the Western Pathologists Quality Assurance Association decided to include the American Society for Clinical Pathology, who support the importance of laboratory science programs, in the name of the endowment as well as to provide amendment authority.

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is the world’s largest professional membership organization for pathologists and laboratory professionals. Their mission is to provide excellence in education, certification and advocacy on behalf of patients, pathologists and laboratory professionals across the globe. With more than 100,000 members, the society’s influence has guided the application and evolution of the pathology and laboratory medicine specialty since 1922.
