Donor to the Susan Elizabeth Thomsen Endowed Scholarship

Susan Elizabeth Thomsen, whose name is reflected in the title of this endowment, spent much of her life in Ketchikan, Alaska. She had a colorful career working for the Alaska Superior and District Courts as a magistrate judge, coroner and public guardian. She finished her legal career in Olympia, Washington as an Assistant Attorney General. During her career, she discovered the joy of teaching and obtained a Master in Arts in teaching. Susan particularly enjoyed teaching legal procedure at the annual state trooper academy in Sitka for many years. Susan spent her later years knitting washcloths for the homeless and writing stories about her Ketchikan career in a memoir for her granddaughters. Those stories tell of her love of Alaska and the unique challenges and joys of life in Southeast Alaska. The Donor is establishing this endowment to remember her friend’s many contributions that have made a difference to those in need, her wise and wry humor and her dedication to those who seek to learn.
