Dr. Roush
Thomas Weld Roush, M.D., completed his medical degree at the University of Washington in 1973. After graduating, he completed his internship and residency at Harlem Hospital in New York, followed by a fellowship in medical oncology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He established a multispecialty medical facility in New York, where he practiced internal medicine. In addition to his clinical practice, he taught toxicology at the Columbia School of Public Health and conducted basic cell biology research on chemical carcinogenesis at the Columbia University Institute for Cancer Research.
Dr. Roush has a deep interest in and involvement with environmental issues. In 1985, he became a board member of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), mindful of the scientific rigor with which that organization pursues its issues. Through the NRDC, he has participated in scientific inquiry, advocacy and policy, with a particular interest in addressing environmental toxins. Dr. Roush acknowledges that the early scientific training that he received at the UW School of Medicine — in particular, the thought processes he developed through independent study projects — provided a solid foundation for his scientific endeavors.
In 1979, Dr. Roush directed the Buckeye Trust to make a generous gift to the UW School of Medicine in recognition of his education. The Thomas W. Roush, M.D. Endowed Fund for Medical Education was established in 2012 to provide long-term financial support for scholarships.
