The Friends of the School of Medicine

The Friends of the University of Washington School of Medicine is committed to supporting medical students in all areas of their education and experience. The volunteer group is made up of UW faculty, emeritus faculty, staff, spouses and others interested in supporting medical students. Founded in 1949 as the Medical Faculty Wives, the group later expanded its role and in 1978 changed its name to the Medical School Auxiliary. In 1993, the organization expanded once again, adopting its current name. Throughout its 60-year history the group has been dedicated to supporting the School’s mission and providing financial assistance to medical students.

During Campaign UW: Creating Futures that ended in 2008, several members of the Friends took advantage of a University-wide matching gift program to create a scholarship endowment legacy. Individual endowments were created and their income pooled to provide permanent resources for medical student scholarships at the UW School of Medicine.

Contributors to the scholarship include Catherine J. Ensinck and John W. Ensinck, M.D., Fel. ’62; Bruce Ferguson and Elspeth V. Ferguson; Anne M. Green and William L. Green, M.D.; Judith A. Hodson and W. Alan Hodson, M.D.; Mart Mannik, M.D., and Zita L. Mannik; J. Donald Ostrow, M.D., and Judith F. Ostrow; Bonnie W. Ramsey, M.D., Res. ’79, Res. ’80, and Paul G. Ramsey, M.D.; Andrea B. Williams; and Thelma K. Wood and Francis C. Wood, Jr., M.D., Res. ’61.

Cathy Ensinck, who passed away in 2011, spearheaded the fundraising effort to establish this permanent legacy to the Friends of the UW School of Medicine. In recognition of her long-standing involvement with the Friends and this effort, the donors to this scholarship have asked that it be awarded annually in honor of Cathy and John Ensinck.
